I couldn't make it out because of horrible lighting and the way it was so out of place, but i could have sworn it started with 88, and it almost looked like it had another 88 after it. It would much more likely be, as he suggested, that the serial number actualy started with 98 which would make it a 1998 model and the signature only looks like it is handwritten.

Or, it could be the pawn shop is up to some funny business which isn't beyond the realm of possibility given how so many of them operate.
